Burda Website Rant

Ok, so by now most of you have already heard about the closing of Burda Fashion website for EG speakers and “merging” it with Burda Style.
I am going to start by saying that I am not one of those people opposed to change and new things, not in the least. However, I am miffed by this decision. I am also confused by what might have inspired it! After a long courting of American sewers, Burda just decides to take away its entire magazine website from them?
I used to use the magazine website a lot – for the archives, for previews, etc. Now I have to go to the Russian website (thank goodness my Russian is still decent) and navigate from there. But why? To me, Burda Style serves a completely different purpose than Buda Fashion and has a distinctly different concept altogether. I, personally, don’t care about it, but that is just me. There are plenty of people who like it and use it. What I am struggling with is why suddenly EG users are denied access to the most popular features of Burda Fashion. I read some of the explanations that the people behind Burda Style have provided, and found them plenty lame. They say that “some” features will be eventually added to the Burda Style, but fail to elaborate on which features and when. Now, if it was up to me, I would have first asked for opinions of users before doing something this major. Even then, though, I would have done a gradual move to Burda Style, and present users with a full of features website, as opposed to one that is yet to be populated.

Bottom-line for me, I've spent plenty of time on Burda Style to determine it is not my cup of tea, and I don’t see using it in future. As long as the access to the Russian Burda Fashion website remains an option, I’d continue going there for previews and archives.

What do you all think?

Burda is just ticking me off all the way around. I am dropping my subscription.

I did drop it, too pricey for me. Not to mention 6 months later you see similar lines repeated. Burda Style is more artsy, some very wardrobe refashiony mentality, but not all of it. Some vintage lovers are on there and there are some good pieces shown. I have seen a few patterns I like, the Alexander blouse, Heidi dress, Elaine's Coffee Date dress, etc., but not the same as BWOF was. I am not putting Burda Style people down, but like you say, not exactly what I am looking for.

BurdaStyle has had that attitude for a while now. When they started charging for their previously free download patterns, they didn't ask for any user feedback, or even give anyone notice that they were going to be doing it.
When it first started, I found it to be very a inspirational and helpful site, but after a while it seemed to become very negative and mean. I have not been back since, and don't intend to now, even if they claim to be "upgrading". (which they always were, but nothing ever got fixed)

I agree. I find the BurdaStyle site difficult to navigate, it takes a long time to filter through everything to find substantive, useful info about the patterns. I'm also debating my Burda subscription. After building years of issues, I can find most of what I'd like to make in issues already owned. Of course there's always the "fear" that a missed issue will have a must-have pattern with the very latest updated details, but at what cost? Plus while their photos are much more fashionable now, it's very difficult to see the details in the made-up clothes. Sometimes you can't even see how they really hang on the body. The pages of the dorky crafty things, why? ... I'm thinking of putting the $$ toward a different subscription.

I'll still keep my Burda subscription. But I do hope they find a way to keep the archive. If I knew Russian or German I might be OK but I don't. I use the archive a lot.

Yes, I just want the archive. I really don't like BurdaStyle. There may be some good stuff on there but it is buried in all the artsy craftsy "look at me and my badly photographed, poorly made latest effort". I want to see inspirational stuff, not icky stuff. In short, Burda Style has a very amateur air.

And really, before they changed from BWOF, didn't anyone tell them what BS means in English? That in itself would justify laying off whoever does their market research!

I have a slew of photos bookmarked in the foto gallery that I've had to go back and edit for the 'ru' to access the Russian side. I'm not quiting Burda yet. But, I am pissed about the archives. Pissed. It's also hard for me to navigate because I know little Russian. Luckily, my coworker does. But, still. ARCHIVES.

I agree -- very annoying. I just noticed that the english archives are still available, though, thank goodness! http://www.burdamode.com:8080/en/Magazines/Archives/1270777-1463237.html

Hi There,

We definitely understand your concerns, and apologize for the inconvenience this recent redirection caused.

While we were not as adequately prepared for this change as we would have hoped, our team is diligently working on ensuring that the key data from Burda Fashion is properly migrated to BurdaStyle, and that both communities come to view BurdaStyle as a place that encourages and inspires their unique sewing journeys.

We understand how frustrating this may be for you, and again apologize for that. Please know that we are doing all we can and are listening to your concerns.

Best,

David @ BurdaStyle

I think the new website layout stinks. I don't like the fact that there was no notification either. I kept trying to access Burda magazine website but it immediately redirected me to the other one with no notification. I really hope they keep all the content from the magazine portion.

I agree with everything you've said. I use patterns from Burda Style almost exclusively. The BrudaFashsion website was a perfect complement to the magazine. I see nothing of the magazine on the Burda Style website. I've tried to like it, but I just don't. I hope in the future there will be a place on Burda Style for the sewers who use and love the magazine.

I'm a fan of Burda and will probably stay, but the BurdaStyle site is not my cup of tea either, too difficult to access specific things, you need to literally dig to find a thing. I'm sad they're migrating, cause I was so used to go to BWOF and have everything within seconds and just few clicks. Burda is unique, what other fashion magazine is there to produce such an amount of patterns (even if similar lines come often) monthly?

Personally, I love Burdastyle, but I really don't care one way or the other about the redirect. However, one super-awesome new thing that Burda Fashion is doing is posting its patterns on Burdastyle, so you wouldn't even need to subscribe to the magazine (usually there's only one or two patterns I like or would make anyway) to get the patterns. Hope that encourages some of you!

I wish you would start a Burdastyle sewing group for the front range area. Denver seems to be void of garment sewing enthusiasts. Your ability and sense of style are impeccable! I'm certain your time is limited with a new baby on the way! Any ideas?

The whole Burda thing is frustrating but where else can you find current style without numerous pattern alterations? Big 4 run large and each pattern sizing seems different. I am new enough to sewing that pattern alteration is a mystery and I find burda patterns easier to manipulate. I rely heavily on the blogs for instruction and inspiration and rarely use burdastyle.
