Contests and Some Projects Update

The voting for My Pattern contest started on the 2nd of August and will continue till the 12th of August - 2 more days. This is the page where you (if you've been a member of the PR for at least 3 months) can vote for any of the contest entries:

The ansemble on the left - a sailor twill pant and a ruched sleeve jersey top - is what I am participating with.

The voting for the One Fabric - Knit Contest (also held by PR) is also ending on the 12th of August and here: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/ContestGallery.pl?ContestID=72 you can vote for your favorites. My entry in this contest is the yelllow maxi dress to the right:

On the update side, I am working on three things right now.

1. A drapey piece inspired by this Obakki top:
After 3 muslins my version (which is not a complete knock-off, there are some design changes) is essentially done but the weather outside is kind of cold, so I am waiting for a sunnier day to take pictures. I also made a choker to go with it.

2. I am done with the muslin for Burda WOF 09/2007-120 top (to the right). I have to find the right fabric (thinking black) and I am so making it!

3. I am in the process of fitting the muslin for Burda WOF 09/2007-121 jumper-dress (to the left) and I still have not made my mind if I actually like the style on me. If I decide to make it, I am wondering what color to make it (I know I don't want it black, for sure).

This is all for now. I start school in a week and my sewing time will be limited until mid-December, but hopefully will be able to squeeze some projects in.

2nd Muslin - Getting Closer to Siling Off!

I finally made the 2nd muslin for the sailor pants… Yeah, it took a while, didn’t it! It’s made from cotton twill (in order to get a more exact idea of how the pant would drape). The front crotch problem seems to be resolved and I like the placement of the pockets/buttons/buttonholes. Here are some photos of the front and the back:

After the 2nd muslin I had a 9-point list of pattern adjustments that I needed to apply to my pattern - some minor fitting issues and some other issues related to the construction of the sailor front.
Here are my materials for the pant:

Now back to making the actual pant!

"My Pattern" Contest

So, there is a contest organized by Patternreview.com that I consider entering – the “MY Pattern” Contest. The contest will run from June 1st, 2008 to July 31st, 2008 and its object is to create a garment, or an coordinated outfit using one’s own design and/or original pattern. Patterns can be created using any method (draping, drafting, using blocks, drafting software, etc.). Winners will be determined by reader votes.
I have only once before participated in a PR contest – the Knock-Off Contest of 2007. Then I entered a blazer, a knockoff of an Ingwa Melero Blazer. Here is a picture of that project.

As far as this contest goes, I am thinking of entering a coordinated outfit consisting of a pair of sailor pants and TBD coordinating top. I have never been much into the marine theme, however, this year the sailor pant has captured my attention. Here are some of the inspiration pieces for the pants:

Theory “Rease – Radar” Pant:

I actually saw the Theory "Rease Radar" pant at Saks, and let me tell you, it had me somewhat perplexed. First, I really appreciate Theory as a brand; I like their straight-forward design, great fit, and high quality fabrics. However, this particular item had the quality (both fabric and sewing) of an Old Navy/Gap garment, which is ok, but only if the price tag says $30-$50, not $215! Anyway, apart from my dislike for the fabric/quality/craftsmanship/price, I LOVED the fresh, yet perennial style.

I' ll be drafting the pattern myself and using K. King's "The Trouser Draft" as a fitting reference. This will be my first sailor front , so this should be fun!
